Jennifer’s Journal – November 2023

If everything goes according to plan, you should be receiving this on Friday, November 3.  Apparently, the first Friday in November is Love Your Lawyer Day – which doesn’t even make it to the level of a Hallmark holiday and was probably created as a joke.

However, I’m going to use the occasion to tell all of you a little bit about why I love being a lawyer.  I must’ve been a very boring child, because I don’t remember ever wanting to be anything but a lawyer.  I have no idea why or where it came from.  And, honestly, after a couple of years as a lawyer, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be one anymore.  I didn’t enjoy what I was doing, my monthly parking bills or having to wear pantyhose.  Then, I found elder law.

Practicing in the world of elder and special needs law gives me the opportunity to make a difference in my clients’ lives and to help families dealing with difficult situations and circumstances.  I meet some of the most interesting people and can have a little fun with some of my clients.  Every meeting is a new set of problems to solve and no two days are ever the same.  And I haven’t worn pantyhose in years.

Part of my fear when I opened VanderVeen Elder and Special Needs Law was that my quirky, laid back style would turn people off or that I would lose clients without the name of a prestigious law firm to back me up.  I’m so thankful that I was wrong.  I love coming into the office to see what new fun the day will bring and, when I get too frustrated or stressed out, I love being able to go curl up on my beanbag or take a spin in one of the conference room chairs.

Thanks for being along for the ride!

Cheers,
